Keyword Clusters: The Secret to Smarter SEO and Better Rankings

You’ve probably heard a lot about keywords and how to use them in your online business. But did you know that keyword clusters are a powerful way to take your keyword strategy to the next level? I only learned of them about a year ago but once I did, it just made perfect sense to use them.

In this post, I’ll explain what keyword clusters are, why they matter, and how you can create and use them to drive more organic traffic to your site.

What Are Keyword Clusters?

At its simplest, a keyword cluster is a group of related keywords that revolve around a central, main keyword (often called the “pillar keyword”). Instead of focusing on just one keyword for each blog post or page, you target a group of related keywords that all contribute to the same overall topic.

For example, let’s say your main keyword is “fitness equipment.” Your cluster keywords might include:

  • Best fitness equipment for home workouts
  • Affordable fitness equipment for beginners
  • Top-rated gym equipment for small spaces
  • Fitness equipment for strength training

These keywords are all related to the main topic (fitness equipment) but are more specific and help you rank for multiple variations of the topic.

The goal with keyword clusters is to create a hub-and-spoke model (another concept I learned about just before keyword clusters.) You write one comprehensive “pillar” page or post that covers a broad topic, with several related blog posts (“spokes”) that dive deeper into specific aspects of that topic.

Why Keyword Clusters Matter

Keyword clusters aren’t just a nice-to-have—they’re a must for improving your SEO strategy. Here’s why:

How to Create Keyword Clusters

Now that you know why keyword clusters are important, let’s talk about how to create them. It’s easier than you think!

Step 1: Start with a Core Topic

The first step is to identify your core topic or pillar keyword. This is the broad subject that will anchor your cluster. It should be something relevant to your niche and something that people frequently search for.

Example: If your affiliate site is focused on fitness products, your core topic could be something like:

  • “Best Fitness Equipment”
  • “Home Gym Essentials”
  • “Top Workout Gear for Beginners”

This is your main keyword or pillar topic that will serve as the central page of your cluster.

Step 2: Find Related Keywords (Cluster Keywords)

Next, you’ll need to find a bunch of related keywords that you can target in your cluster. These are the long-tail keywords or variations of your main topic.

There are a few ways to find these related keywords:

  • Keyword Research Tools: Use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, Ubersuggest, or SEMrush to get keyword suggestions related to your core topic.
  • Google Search: Type your main keyword into Google and look at the “related searches” at the bottom of the page. These are often good ideas for cluster keywords.
  • Competitor Research: See what your competitors are ranking for and check out their keyword strategy.
  • Answer the Public: This is a great tool for finding questions people are asking around your topic. You can target those as cluster keywords.

For example, if your core topic is “Best Fitness Equipment,” some cluster keywords could be:

Now that you have your core topic and cluster keywords, it’s time to create your content. Here’s how you can structure it:

  1. Pillar Content (Main Topic): Write a comprehensive, in-depth post that covers your core topic in detail. For example, if your pillar topic is “Best Fitness Equipment for Home Workouts,” your post should be long and cover a wide variety of fitness equipment options, benefits, and tips.
  2. Cluster Content (Supporting Posts): For each of your cluster keywords, create a more focused piece of content. These should be standalone blog posts that go deeper into specific aspects of the main topic. For example:
    • “Top 10 Affordable Fitness Equipment for Small Spaces”
    • “How to Choose the Best Dumbbells for Your Home Gym”
    • “Best Exercise Bikes for Home Use: A Complete Guide”

Step 4: Link Your Content Together

Once your pillar and cluster content is ready, you need to link them together. This is where the magic happens!

  • Link from the cluster posts to the pillar post: In each of your supporting posts, link to the main pillar post so readers can access the broader content.
  • Link from the pillar post to the cluster posts: Similarly, in your main pillar post, link to the supporting cluster posts to help users navigate through more specific content on your site.

This internal linking structure shows Google that your content is related and helps search engines understand the context and hierarchy of your pages.

Step 5: Monitor and Optimize

Once your content is live, don’t just leave it there. You need to monitor its performance and make sure your keyword clusters are driving the traffic you want.

  • Use Google Search Console to track which keywords are bringing traffic to your cluster pages.
  • Check your rankings: Are your pillar posts ranking for the main keyword? Are your cluster posts ranking for their respective keywords?
  • Update and refresh your content: SEO is an ongoing process. Over time, make sure to update your posts with new information and optimize them for additional keywords.

Keyword clusters are a powerful strategy that can take your SEO game to the next level. When you organize your content around a central topic and group related keywords together, you increase your chances of ranking higher on Google, driving more traffic to your site, and improving the overall user experience. It’s a smart, scalable strategy that can help you build a strong, organized content structure while targeting multiple search queries.
